Roxy at Silky Wraps was kind enough to send her product to us for review. I wore the bonnet to cover a twist-out right before the new year. I received the bonnet pictured above with a beautiful black with white polka dot lining. Here are the products claims from the site:

This bonnet does everything it claims and in addition will looks adorable on your little KnapsGirl with the optional ribbon closure.

After two days of wear, My twist-out was preserved without being "squished", It has a more substantial feel than other beauty supply satin bonnets I've owned. I assume the heavier feel will translate to better life in the washer. There are more sedate designs for ladies but I was happy with the rainbow butterflies. :) Roxy also makes wraps for relaxed hair. The wraps cost $19.95 each, that being said and regular readers knowing how ~~cheap~~ thrifty I am, I have found that in this area, it is good to make an investment. I have bought countless beauty supply satin bonnets and long rectangular scarves and they have added up to more than $20 before the year was over (they only seem to make it few months in the washer). I purchased a similar product( at the same price) and never looked back. The only drawback I did find was that the rippled bonnets edge may leave an impression on the forehead. Silky Wraps informes me that it is available with a flat edge. When you decide, in my humble opinion, think carefully about how active your little one is while asleep.

Derby City Naturals said it all in her blog. I will only add that in viewing the posters response video she compares images of children playing with, switching and modeling wigs to what she did in the initial video.

There is a vast difference between children playing with wigs and applying a lacefront wig to your child and telling her how beautiful she looks.

The mother seems to be a very talented wig designer/stylist I just think she doesn't realize the impact of her actions.

Afro Wigs Offensive?

Halloween is approaching and I've been reading many blog post on racist Halloween costumes. Some costumes are obvious in their offensiveness: All "sexy" professions (because women can't just be professionals), caricatures of traditional costumes of ethnic groups (Native Americans, Asians) but are afro wigs as part of Halloween costumes offensive?

Before I wrote this post, I googled afro wig and was surprised that ANY curly wig is referred to as an afro. The wigs were red, pink and blue, isn't that just a curly wig or even a novelty wig. I don't think these have any relation to my hair or hair texture.

My next problem is how they are advertised:

What's with the silly faces? Is this a hair style that is inherently comedic?

And last but not least, why would a colorless person NEED an afro wig for a costume? If they are invoking the 1970's they can just do straight hairstyles from that era. If they are portraying a person of color isn't wearing and afro wig just as bad as blackface?

Fro Fashion Week Fall 2011 was a whirlwind of excitement and education. The event was beautifully planned and executed by Tarin Boone its creator.

The weekend events started off Friday evening with cocktail party featuring live performances, a DJ, a buffet and product samples. Saturday morning there was a Zumba fitness class for all, an invitational brunch for bloggers and product representatives. I was honored to be seated next to the celebrity guest of honor Kim Coles during brunch. :D She was gracious and personable.

The day continued with workshops I attended Thirsty Roots module that helped women find natural hair resources online, Virtuous Styls module, looking fabulous on a budget. It was wonderful. Kim Coles was featured in her own module on Saturday.

Throughout the day the various vendors are available to all attendees including Nappy Rutz, Bee Mine, Pura Body Naturals, Koils by Nature, Bags that Beckon and many more.

Saturday evening there was THE Fro Fashion Week Fashion Show.

Sunday the educational modules continued until the Pool Party finale. The pool was beautiful and had lovely cabanas, a buffet, a bar, a DJ, product demonstrations, samples and give-a-ways sponsored by Kinky-Curly.

I was amazed by by the beautiful custom Barbie dolls created by Tabloach. The dolls had braids, locs, BAAs and TWAs. I found a tutorial on how to afro-lize my Barbie.

After the World Natural Hair Show 2011, Design Essentials Naturals invited myself, Swarthy Daisy, Mhe magazine, Napptural Roots magazine and others to small reception.

After a light meal, we were all permitted to interview Cornell McBride Sr. and Cornell McBride Jr. The McBrides are the owners of Design Essentials. Mr. McBride Sr. was the original creator of Stay-Soft Fro, following the success of that product he and a partner formed M&M Products company. Mr. McBride sold M&M products in 1990 to focus on products designed for professionals and founded Design Essentials.

Mr. McBride Jr. now heads the company. Mr. McBride Jr. stated that the Naturals line is targeted at the consumer who wants to maintain the hair themselves with salon quality products. Both the Design Essentials and Design Essentials Naturals products can be purchased in salons and online directly from the company.

World Natural Hair Show 2011-Fall

I attended the World Natural Hair Show 2011 this past Saturday. This year is the fist year the show has been offered in both the fall and the spring. Traditionally, the event occured in April each year. The show has grown almost exponentially this past April the venue was filled to capacity. I personally watched as the number of people exiting and entering was closely counted because they had reached the fire marshall's limit.

The fall show was far less crowded than spring. There were fewer vendors and some large companies were notably absent. I found this pleasant. There was more room for people to navigate the venue, many local and smaller companies were featured and for the first time I was able to attend the complimentary workshops. In the past, it took so long to navigate the venue ans see all the vendors I routinely forgot to attend scheduled workshops. The smaller crowd allowed me to see everything and experience things that I wasn't able to in the past due to the size of the crowds.

Hand-On interaction in the Design Esssentials Area

I was very impressed with Design Essentials, Jamaican Mango and Lime, Jane Carter Solution and of course Taliah Waajid's Black Earth. These companies have historically offered great show prices and quality products. Shea Moisture was also there.

Design Essentials recently launched their Naturals line, see my review here. I attended both of their sponsored workshops: Thermal Silkening and Natural Styling. The presenters were personable, knowledgeable and encouraged crowd interaction. I learned tips and tricks for styling, deep conditioning and thermal straightening. Following the show, I was invited to a media event sponsored by Design Essentials Naturals.

Design Essentials Naturals Review

The fine people at Design Essentials gave me their Natural line of products to try. I used them exclusively for a month as asked so I could provide a true review. I was also given an instruction booklet that had style instructions.

Natural Curl Cleanser (8 oz bottle)
This is a rich sulfate free shampoo. I liked the fruity scent, it cleaned my hair. I wasn't overly impressed however, I can say all steps following shampooing went well. I take the success later in styling as proof that the shampoo did not strip, un-balance the ph or other wise detrimentally effect my hair.

Natural Moisturizing Conditioner (8 oz bottle)
I really liked this product. It is very thick, rich and moisturizing, it smells fruity like the shampoo. I used it following shampoo twice and once ( thinned with water) to co-wash. My only suggestion is that the packaging be changed because the conditioner is so thick that squeezing it from the small opening is a little challenging. Following the shampoo and conditioner, my hair was soft, moisturized and smelling sweet.

Natural Daily Moisturizing Lotion (8oz bottle)
At first touch I was surprised, I thought I had grabbed the wrong product. The Daily Moisturizing Lotion is a little viscous (slimy), the scent matches that of the rest of the line. This product works great. My hair felt moisturized, it had a beautiful shine and the thing I like best was it seems engineered to help create second day hair. If you re-wet your hair after using it thoroughly it becomes very soft and pliable again without losing any moisture.

Natural Defining Crème Gel (16 oz jar)
This is exactly what it says a cream gel. I used it in conjunction with the Natural Daily Moisturizing Lotion as directed. I shingled my hair it dried with good curl definition and no dryness. I was able to wear the style easily for a week. I misted my hair with water and shook it to refresh the stye daily. I think this is a great wash-no-go product but I very seldom wear wash-n-go's.

Wash-n-Go with Defining Crème Gel- day 2 or 3

Natural Curl Stretching Cream (16 oz jar)
This is a very rich moisturizing cream with the same light fruity scent as the others. I accidentally used it instead if the Natural Defining Crème Gel for a wash-n-go. This was not the recommended product for curl definition but I got compliments. I shingled it in my hair following the Daily Moisturizing Lotion.

Wash-n-Go with Curl Stretching Cream

The second time I used the Curl Stretching Cream as directed for a set of two strand twists. I added the cream to each section as I twisted and kept my hair wet with a spray bottle. I attended a family gathering where I was again complimented on the shine and softness of my twists. I am still wearing the twists but all signs point to a beautiful twist-out.

My overall impression is a good one. I would definitely purchase the Moisturizing Lotion, Defining Gel and Stretching Cream.

I give the whole line 4 of 5 Knaps. I deduct one Knap for cost (because I'm cheap).

Pampered Nail & Body Spa

GoodGirlPR and HAUTE hosted a three city beauty Tweet-Up. The Atlanta host for the event was Pampered Nail and Body Spa. The beautiful salon/spa is located in the Castleberry Hill neighborhood. The spa features: massages, facials, threading, waxing, manicures/pedicures and hair services (for natural hair)

The staff was friendly, professional and courteous. My companion, Leah (Naturally Fierce founder) enjoyed wine during her manicure.

We both had pedicures and very much enjoyed the experience. I would recommended this lovely and reasonably priced spa to anyone and look forward to returning for any of their services. I was honored to have Nekesa Smith, master stylist of Nekesa's Natural Hair Loft use me as a hair model. She is an experienced stylist with a beautiful shop in College Park, Ga. The shop offers a range of services including fitness classes and parties. Nekesa enjoys educating her clients about their hair and haircare and also has line of hair products, Natural Radiance.

My hair was lightly blown out the Natural Radiance Hair Nourisher was applied and then as each section was twisted the Moisture Mousse was applied. Medium to large two strand twists were left in for a day and then styled before the audience. The Moisture Mousse was amazing, it had a nice hold but not hard and is completely alcohol free.

Each model showed their starting style and each style was then transformed before the audience.The ladies of Naturally Fierce-ATL were featured as models. Guests were treated to a hors d'ouveres buffet, several local vendors were in attendance thanks to People Unite and free hair consultations were available.

Dwight Eubanks and Judge & Colorist Oliver Adams of Too Groovy Salon

I was honored to be invited as part of the press to this competition. It took place in a beautiful art gallery in downtown Atlanta. It was catered by Lush Life catering who offered a delicious array of hors d'oeuvres and trays complimented by the bar offering two delicious citrus based champagne cocktails. The cocktail hour was marked by models showing fantasy styles by James Harris.

The competition opened with introductions by Dwight Eubanks of Real Housewives of Atlanta fame. Specials awards were given to members of the Atlanta stylist community then the models were brought out covered. The stylist were given a short time to finish their looks and answer question before judging.

The most pleasant part of the experience (outside of the food) was speaking with Oliver. He has a head full of glorious locs and showed a great knowledge and appreciation for natural hair. He spoke with passion about coloring without damaging the hairs integrity, using as many natural ingredient as possible and how most color damage is because hair is being processed twice, relaxing and coloring. Oliver feels that "natural hair is like a blank canvas" for colorist and enjoys coloring it.

Haute Hair Afffair - Atlanta

Yesterday I attended Karen's Body Beautiful Haute Hair Affair here in Atlanta. The downtown location was beautiful and elegant. We were treated to complimentary mini cupcakes of various flavors and fillings. Representatives from Hue-tiful steamers were present as well as Ms. Karen herself.

I learned that Karen's Body Beautiful has product ambassadors. An ambassador may live in your area and you can buy directly from them and not have to purchase online (no shipping). I discovered that I have an ambassador not too far from me. :D

Unfortunately because of the number of ladies, jovial atmosphere, background music and open architecture of the bar I was unable to hear any of Ms. Karen's speech when she addressed the group.

I did leave with a "goodie bag", a full tummy and several compliments on my, unusual for me, wash-n-go style.

I just discovered an interesting blog called Tweeny Hair. The site is dedicated to styling hair for teen and "tweens".

I recently watched an episode of Toddlers & Tiaras, the child pageant show on TLC, I was delighted to see a contestant with natural hair. I happily tweeted that she was on the show and placed in her age group.

Unfortunately, this child was not the featured contestant. The featured contestants were Alaska and her brother Dakota. Dakota is bi-racial. In a interview with his mother she spoke candidly about not knowing what her bi-racial child wold look like before he was born. She said she rubbed her pregnant belly each night and said, "Good hair, good hair, good hair". She was "rewarded" with a child she describes as "exotically attractive" with "pin straight chestnut hair". She describes her daughter as a classic beauty because of her blonde hair and blue eyes.

Today's Hair - "Cinna-bun"

Style: The Cinna-bun

Time to Complete: 15 mins

Products Used: Water/v05 conditioner mix, EcoStyler Gel, One N Only Argan Oil(small amount)

Tools Used: Brush, Skinny Wrap(to tie hair back), Scarf, bobby pins

Reason for style: I had done a dry twist out the night before and my hair looked crazy in the morning.

Lessons Learned: Kept my ends SUPER moisturized, fast to complete than I thought, great go-to style on 'bad hair' days.

Does V05 love us back?

I was pondering my ( and many other naturals ) love for the V05 line of conditioners. They have many positive points:
-affordable
-variety of scents
-add sufficient slip for detangling
-easily found in a variety of stores
-great base if you want to add your own ingredients

BUT at this point should the Alberto-Culver company be marketing to us. I know of countless articles, blog post and YT videos that sing its praises. I visited their website here and not only did not see any women of color but also no hair of texture.

This is the only model featured on the site.

I guess I'm thing how even some of the larger companies have tried lame and unconvincing marketing ploy to attract women with natural hair.

I agree with some of the points in this video but WHY did she have to start by "classically" letting everyone know that although she wears weaves and lace fronts she REALLY does have hair.

In my opinion, it detracts from her credibility. You are questioning why black men are so worried about your hair but you use a full two minutes to let strangers know that you have long hair under your wig. That is why men care, they were raised by women like you.

Claims:
A light, alcohol-free, Conditioning hydrating gel. Stops frizz, adds moisture, defines, shapes and seals in any size or texture of curl. Dries soft and adds shine with no flaking.

Review:
I applied this product to soaking wet hair after washing and conditioning.( The directions say it can also be used on dry hair.) It is a clear gel. I found that this product imparted NO moisture but lived up to all other claims. I used it on a chunky twist-out, that had to be untwisted prematurely. Anyone who has unraveled their twists too soon knows that this means a disastrous, fuzzy mess. Curl Sealer true to its claims prevented this from happening

I find this product lived up to most of its claims and is reasonably priced.

I give it five out of five Knaps.

Review:
I applied this product to soaking wet hair after washing and conditioning.( The directions say it can also be used on dry hair.) It is a thick cream that goes on like a butter. It did define my curls well. Throughout the day my hair dried with shiny,defined curls, they were not stiff or dry. (Please note: This product makes no claim to reduce shrinkage.) I found it refreshing that there was a curl defining product that wasn't a gel.

I find this product lived up to all its claims and is reasonably priced.

I give it five out of five Knaps..

Sof N Free Gro Healthy - Review

I washed my hair with Organix Tea Tree and Mint Hydrating shampoo and conditioned with LUSH Coolauin and Suave Almond & Shea butter conditioners. The shampoo left my hair almost squeaky clean but the conditioners corrected that. I started with the:
Really Deep Conditioning Treatment ($1.99). I sectioned my hair into fourths and applied the entire pouch as directed. I made 4 large two strand twists and covered with a plastic cap, satin cap and towel. (I don't own a hair dryer.) This product contains menthol and you can FEEL it. I found the sensation pleasant to slightly over stimulating. Those with sensitive scalps may not like this feeling. I left it on for 30 minutes and then rinsed. It left my hair soft and moisturized. Overall it lives up to its claims just beware the menthol.

Next I applied the Leave -In Treatment ($5.99) to wet hair as directed. It provided NO slip. It wasn't drying but didn't feel like it added moisture. It claims to soften for easy combing but not in my case. I detangled in the shower, I conditioned in large twists and returned to large twists after rinsing. When I added the Leave-In Treatment and began brushing with my Denman, I felt no real added slip. This spray does contain lots of glycerin for those whose hair like glycerin, mine doesn't. I don't think it lived up to it claim.

Finally I began twisting with the Strengthening Creme ($5.99). It is smooth, creamy, lightly fruit scented. This product contains mineral oil. I used it as I usually use Lil Better Butter. My hair felt like it had external moisture but not internal moisture. After two sections of twisting, I was spraying Leave-In treatment to rewet to no avail so I applied the:

Daily Growth Lotion. ($5.99) The lotion has a fresh fruity light scent and a lotion-like consistency. My hair felt moisturized and used with the Strengthening Creme my twists looked and felt moisturized. Hindsight being 20/20, I would recommend using the Growth Lotion before the Strengthening Creme. Combined, I think the last two products deliver on their respective claims to reduce breakage and moisturize.

I haven't used the Three Layer Growth Oil yet.

I think these products are worth a try. They are reasonably priced and pretty widely available. They are not the best I've used but they have potential depending on you and your hair. I'd suggest trying samples for yourself.

It was my distinct pleasure to interview, be serenaded by and receive a hand massage from Will Williams, Director of Education-M&M products.

Mr. Williams spoke enthusiastically about the light molecular weight of the SofN'Free Gro Healthy products. He demonstrated their ability to quickly absorb by massaging it into the hand of myself and Amber of Expressive Beauty.

When I asked if the GroHealthy line was a "bandwagon" item from M&M products for naturals. He endorsed the quality of the products saying the SofnFree is and was well known for their relaxer and "curl" products but that GroHealthy, "is not your grandma's Sofn'Free."

My speech was a success! I performed a Product Intervention on product junkies. The ladies were enthusiastic, open and full of relevant questions. The night ended with a mixer to help all the new "curlfriends" get acquainted.

Saturday featured workshops on styling, corporate hair, skin care, transitioning Q&A and a live big chop.

I'm still here as I type so look for a follow-up with the rest of the event.

Her book is a complete guide to hair health. It includes positive affirmations, surveys to asses your opinion of natural/nappy hair and nutrition and transition guides. There is a special chapter for children including fostering their self esteem and good nutrition. The book concludes with styling instruction.

Childrens Hair Care - Part 2

Moms that want this look want this look for their daughters.

I wrote previously about parents poor hair care on their children. I believe this begin with the parent ( especially the mother). If a mother suffers from hair delusion what can she offer her daughter. Hair delusions include but are not limited to the belief that all length is good, any hair that looks good is good regardless of health, straight/loosely curled hair is superior to kinky/tightly curled hair, hair texture can prevent growth and oils moisturize.

The mothers seem oblivious to the fact that the heads of hair they covet are those of celebrities. A celebrity's appearance is part of their job, they have a TEAM devoted just to caring for and styling their hair. I don't expect my hair to look like that of natural celebrities for that reason. I don't have a team of stylist. If you don't have a team why should you look like them, relaxer or not.

I believe these women place this same pressure on their child, expecting them to look like the children on the relaxer boxes. The child doesn't have a team and in most cases not even a well informed parent. They bear your disappointment through demeaning words or caustic chemicals.

If you teach these delusions to your child in addition to the messages she gets from the larger society what will she think? I have seen the results. She is a four-year -old who teases another four-year-old because her shrunken natural hair doesn't show length or swing and flow. She will call her peer "bald-headed" and "ugly". She will ask with all the malice a child can muster, "Who did your hair?". She will learn she is not perfect the way she was born and will want to let her peers know too.

Childrens Hair Care - Part 1

I have been making some very pointed statements in chats recently in regards to childrens hair care. A couple of people misunderstood my stance, I should begin by saying I am a teacher. I have spent years viewing many tiny heads of hair. Teachers like social workers and doctors sometimes see the worst of what society has to offer.

I have seen many happy, healthy heads of hair atop well-adjusted minds. I believe that this is a result of their upbringing, the example set by their mother, the language used in reference to them and their hair.

I have also seen the opposite:

-bald/thinning hair in girls under 5
-weave/braids attached to bald/thinning hair
-hair broken off to TWA length at age 4
-all manner of negative comments made within ear shot of the child (her hair is just so nappy..)
-comparison made to other children hair in front of child ( I wish she had hair like that girls.)
-relaxing hair as soon as possible after scalp trauma ( like rash or skin infection)
-hair pulled with extreme tension
-extreme dryness
-relaxed children insulting natural children
-long hair children insulting short hair children

I know some of this is done in ignorance and some in neglect but it doesn't make me ( or the child) feel any better. So if you catch me on a chat sounding a little preach-y about caring for children's hair please remember I probably saw some ignorant perversion of hair care that week.

Claims:
This luxurious butter will melt into your hair and skin, leaving it soft and supple.

Review:
This stuff is rich in all the right ways. It is filled with fantastic butters (shea, cupuacu, mango, cocoa and tacuma) and oils ( almond, coconut and olive). I used it immediately after showering all over. I felt like as soft as a newborns all day!

The scent is floral but not strong or too sweet and blends well with the natural smells of the butters without covering them. After a short time, the scent fades to a light and pleasant smell.

I haven't used it on my hair yet but if my skins reaction is any indication. I may use it tonight after my wash. ;)

I was invited to test Pura Body Naturals at Juiceez and Etc by Atlanta Naturally Fierce. The creator Santeyonne Powell was as charming and approachable as she was knowledgeable and creative. Her products were inspired by her own sensitive skin issues and natural hair journey. Her products can be used on skin and hair and have oil and butter bases.

I tried the Cupuacu Hair Butter, Murumuru Moisture Milk, Rosewater and Grapeseed Facial Moisturizer and two unnamed products: Hair Butter #2 and Hair Lotion #1. All the products were exceptional. Just applying them left my hands soft and moisturized.

Murumuru Moisture Milk

This milk made from the exotic murmuru butter softens hair instantly.

Hair Milk #2

Softened hair like the MMM but had a more moisturizing effect.

Cupuacu Hair Butter

Softened and moisturized in a heartier way as opposed to the lighter milks. I was inspired to twist my hair on the spot after applying the hair milk and butter.

Hair Butter #2

Smelled deliciously nutty and had a truly buttery texture. I loved it and asked to take home the sample. It softened moisturized and gave the hair a beautiful shine.

The event was excellent and I felt honored to have been invited. Santyonne plans a sale in November. She also makes mineral make-up.

Natural Review by L just wrote a review of the Turbo Snake. She bought one because her hair was clogging her drain. I commented that I use a drain cover, so I thought I'd share.

I have a plastic drain cover like the one below:

I purchased it at Wal-Mart for less than $8.00.

I googled drain covers and got these below:

The idea being that the best way to stop a clog is to prevent it.

No matter how ugly you think a drain cover is, this:

Claims:
Coolaulin conditioner has a load of coconut milk and fresh coconut flesh to make dry, curly and processed hair soft and shiny. Exotic, Eastern essential oils of vetivert and benzoin gum calm irritated scalps. Hair will be instantly moisturized and be easier to tame.

Review:
I got this product at a product swap. The original owner seemed underwhelmed, so I had low expectations. It was in my shower in a pinch so I decide to try it for a co-wash. I was surprised to find it left my hair soft, squeaky clean but not feeling stripped.

The smell is another story. If you want your product to smell like a dream this isn't for you. The smell of henna has been compared to fresh, strong hay and this stuff smells like henna.

I give it three out of five Knaps because the scent may put some off and the high price tag.

Today Hair: Wrap-A-Locs on loose hair

Style: Puff with Wrap-A-Loc Bangs

Time to Complete: 45 - 1 hour to roll, 2 hours to air dry

Products Used: AvoCoco Cream, Uncle Funky's Daughter Curly Magic

Tools Used: Wrap-A-Loc

Reason for style: I was asked to review the product :)

Lessons Learned:
1) I can roll my hair with the right roller.
2) Wrap-A-Locs work on loose natural hair.
3) I have to create a style worthy of these smooth shiny tight curls.

I give Wrap-A-Locs four of five Knaps. They help the roller impaired create beautiful curls. I wish I had the long ones.

Style: Twist-out from flat and two strand twists

Approximate time to complete: 30 mins to take down hair, 10 mins to mist and put in barrette

Products Used: Eco Styler Gel, AvoCoco Cream, Burdock Root Butter Cream (on twists), water

Tools Used: my hands and a barrette

Reason for style: Can't waste perfectly good twists by not wearing a twist out too.

Lessons Learned: I'm still low-maintenance.

Style: Flat Twists to the side two strand twist for the rest

Approximate time to complete: 2 hours 15 mins to twist hair, I made twists into bantu knots and went to sleep.

Products Used: Eco Styler Gel, AvoCoco Cream, Burdock Root Butter Cream

Tools Used: Rat-tail comb (for parting flat twists), clips (to hold sections), my hands, bantu knots

Reason for style: Originally it was supposed to be a mohawk, but it got late so I did just one side!

Lessons Learned: Start styling your hair well before 10 pm if you have to wake up.

Beautiful Head of Hair on TV

I was watching Royal Pains this weekend as was struck by a beautiful head of hair. The glorious halo was a fluffy twist-out atop the head of child actor, Skia Jackson. The episode is titled "Big Whoop".

I loved that both her pretend mother and older sister wore straight styles and she did not. I assume a person of color was involved in the casting because it seems when they are not the family is too "match-y, match-y", loc'ed mom, dad and child. We all know that that happens about as often as a white family all being blond because they ALL bleach.

I googled the adorable Ms. Jackson and found her head shot featured the same glorious coif with the addition of an adorable headband.

My hair pet peeves

My hair pet peeves are a combination of annoying trends, myths and just things that bother me.

The obsession with length.
I preface this by saying that I have always had length, however, I think people take things to the extreme. I am short. I have accepted this fact, I do not go around in stilts daily, nor have I unhealthily or unnaturally attached devices to my legs to make myself appear taller. When I have short children, I won't teach them to hate their shortness or put kiddie stilts on them. I don't mind people who wear tall heels or boots but stilettos aren't for children. Would you teach your child to dislike any of their other god-given attributes? Will they tease children without stilettos at school?

Extreme weave hair color
There is a time and a place for everything. When your server has rainbow spikes as she brings your IHOP to the table, are you not convinced that work isn't the place for rainbow hair. Color is fine but unless there is theater involved there is a limit, c'mon son!

Willful Ignorance
Willful is the operative word in that statement. Ignorance is not a crime. We are all ignorant of something right now. If all your natural children have hair for days, your sister has stopped relaxing and grown a healthy halo and you continue to relax thin, dry, broken, damaged, edgeless hair and try to give them tips. If you insist that because their hair is not straight it doesn't look as good as yours. You are willfully ignorant. When all the facts point right and you scream left, you are willfully ignorant. How will you hair compare when your bald?

My hair making statements my mouth doesn't.
I have decided not to relax my hair. I did not start a revolution, nor do I plan to. I am not naive. I realize that assumptions will be made based on my appearance, but WOW could you speak to me first. I eat meat, wear artificial fibers, like people of all colors and think anyone with healthy hair looks good.

Scent: lemon/citrus

This product has a slimy feel which makes the pump a good thought. It is thinner than a gel but not at all watery.

I washed my hair in sections with a sulfate free shampoo detangled in the shower with a shower comb and outside the shower with a D8 Denman brush. I applied 3-4 pumps of the product to each section smoothed and combed it through with the Denman. I let it air dry and it looked like this:

The directions say apply to soaking wet hair I tried but I think some sections were just damp as a result some sections were poofy-er than others. :(

I am not a big curl definition fan because my curls aren't uniform. I think it did a good job. I had hold that wasn't crunchy or hard. My hair did not feel dry. I used far less product than I expected (good value). The next day I fashioned it into a curly fro-hawk with just water and ponytail holders. :)

I give it four out of five Knaps.

I was featured on Our Natural Kids a wonderful site created by The SistahChick of YouTube fame and The Sistah Cafe blog. This wealth of information helps mothers and others take good are of their little natural charges hair. I commend her for forming such a needed group. Many of us have negative if not traumatic memories of our hair as children because our caregivers were not well versed in natural haircare.

I am honored that she has included me and also endorsed Lil Better Butter and AvoCoco Cream as healthy and child-friendly.
