Every length is a revelation

Immediately after transition
The heyday of my puff
So, I've been natural for a while now a as a blogger/vlogger/product maker I think I'm pretty knowledgeable about the basics of hair care. I know the commandments:

  • Thou shalt not comb dry hair
  • Thou shalt not use a fine tooth comb
  • Thou shall spritz thy hair with water as much as your style allows
  • Thou shalt use oils to seal; not moisturize
  • Thou shalt clarify regularly
  • Thou shalt wash hair in a orderly was to prevent tangles, you are not in a shampoo ad
what I had forgotten was as your hairs length changes so do the rules. Initially, I could wash my hair loose, as it grew I had to section it, it grew longer and I had to twist or braid the sections.
medium length with curl defining product - mass shrinkage

When my hair was shorter curl definition products made a curly fro, as it grew it was more like a traditional wash-n-go and now the products give a long loose curly look.

I recently realized that I can no longer detangle and wash at the same time. I was amazed at how much better things went when I detangled before washing. I had a revelation and then remembered I had had several such  revelations previously.

mini twists medium-long hair - mass shinkage
Every length is a revelation so take advantage. Try products you had previously dismissed, try techniques that may not have worked, try styles and tools you may have already written off. I surprised myself with just a basic change.

Natural Hair - not just for little girls

I just discovered an interesting blog called Tweeny Hair. The site is dedicated to styling hair for teen and "tweens".
Tweens and teens often find themselves somewhere between wanting to fit in and wanting to confidently embrace their own identities. So what happens when that naturally curly head of hair is suddenly too old for bows and barrettes, but not yet in need of professional adult styles? Step away from the relaxers and join us as we explore natural hairstyles that find the balance between individuality and the desire to fit in.
What a great concept. There are even post that feature the teens styling their own hair.

Leigh's 2010 Hair in Review

Hi, it's Leigh - the other half of Knapsgirl.com

As the year is coming to an end, I decided to do a collage of my hair styles throughout the past year. I'm not a person that is worried about length AT ALL, I really just love having healthy, wonderful, versatile hair as you can see in the pics.

If you are considering going natural always remember that you will be able to wear your hair is so many styles! It will be so healthy and shiny if you show it love and care.

Enjoy and KEEP UP THOSE STYLES IN 2011 fellow naturals!!!!!! xoxo

3-Yr Old Getting A Weave

I thought we were making progress and then this mother has the audacity to do this on national television!! So sad, she should have stuck to 'hair-pieces' like she said they had done in the past. The little girl keeps saying "ouch" during the whole process. SMH

Curls are a worst?

I was stumbling through some beauty blogs and found that curls were a worst for 2009 according to The Best and Worst Trends of 2009 on the blog Real Beauty-powered by you.

We love a soft wave or even a more tightly wound tendril, but the length coupled with the crazy curliness of this look seems a tad overdone. Is it us, or did her stylist take a cue from Will Ferrell's '07 Oscar look? Heck, with a body like Karina Smirnoff's from all that dancing, who cares what her hair looks like!

Oh! If she had soft waves or looser curls this would be an acceptable style. I assume from the commentary that this woman's hair does not curl naturally, the implication being who would want tight curls they are ugly. I do not think this is one for the styling hall of fame but far from worst.

To place this in persective the picture below was a best for bangs:

I disagree again these are not the best bangs Ive seen either.

Today's Hair - WnG Big Bun

Style: WnG Big Bun

Approximate time to complete:
10 mins

Products Used: Eco Styler Gel, Cantu Shea Butter Leave-in Conditioner\

Tools Used: Elastic Head Band, Bobby pins, boar bristle brush, black afro fist hair pic (hehe)

Reason for style:
Streeeeeeeeetching the 3 day old WnG (Wash n Go) and it looks cute :)

Lessons Learned:
I didn't think I was going to have to tie down the front of my hair after putting on the Eco Styler, but I did. It made the look more "finished". Took a little longer than I anticipated because I had to pic out the bun a lot also, my hair is pretty thin

Black Butterfly Comb

I recently had a minor twist issue ( jacked-up in back, cute in front). I was given a butterfly comb for Christmas. I decided now would be a good time to use it. I love how well it holds my hair and after bantu knoting the front I received several compliments.

My hair looked similar to this post.
