Kinky-Curly Clip-Ins: Good or Bad ?

I risk sounding like a Natural Nazi but I feel conflicted about natural-looking weaves and clip-ins. to be fair, I am also conflicted on weave in general, I have NO problem with protective styling, versatility or hair as a flexible accessory, however I cringe when I think of those who do not understand how to properly care for their hair. The people who still believe that their hair does not grow.

In one instance, clip-ins and weaves are fun, a way to experiment with color or length. Hair is the ultimate accessory, changing it to match an outfit, occasion or mood is wonderful. your hair can be the utmost form of individual expression.

But in another instance, the additional hair can be an expression of insecurity. I fear people add the hair to cover their perceived flaws saying to themselves, "My hair can't/won't grow. I will add this hair to cover/fix it.". I fear they are natural but haven't made a transition. They haven't learned to embrace or care for their hair, the hair just isn't processed any longer.

I agree with some of the points in this video but WHY did she have to start by "classically" letting everyone know that although she wears weaves and lace fronts she REALLY does have hair.

In my opinion, it detracts from her credibility. You are questioning why black men are so worried about your hair but you use a full two minutes to let strangers know that you have long hair under your wig. That is why men care, they were raised by women like you.

Raven openly admits that she wore weave to get more work, but never wore it in her personal life. She told Curly Nikki that she appeared at casting with her curls and was told by managers not to because she was not recognized.

I thought we were making progress and then this mother has the audacity to do this on national television!! So sad, she should have stuck to 'hair-pieces' like she said they had done in the past. The little girl keeps saying "ouch" during the whole process. SMH

Real Men like Real Hair according to NWSO

I am a fan of a blog called Naked With Socks On. I was really interested when I saw the title of his most recent blog: Real Men like Real Hair. After the initial reading I was concerned that "real" meant not artificial as opposed to chemical free. I was delighted to read comment after comment where women referred to their locs, curls, kinks and low fades. I'm glad to to see that both sexes agree "real" means what "real"ly grows from you scalp.

What does the world think of us?

I was reading another blog and found a short entry stating that women of color in other countries believe that African-American women have naturally straight/wavy hair. T shook my head and thought no one could believe that. I began to read the comments and woman after woman from abroad supported the blog. I was taken aback then thought about what they said. The mainstream images of women of color that are sent to the world from America are of relaxed women with weaves.The commentary expressed their desire as children to have "American" hair. Their mothers told them Americans just had hair like that. One even said all American women of color had a white person somewhere in their family and that accounted for their hair texture. I read Americans had stronger hair so relaxers left it beautiful long and shiny. I was filled with horror! I lament everyday that little black girls have to endure the "white beauty myth" in America. How do you combat it when the images are all black? How does a young girl abroad not feel less when she actually thinks that is their hair?
